A lot of clips this is

I was shocked when i accidentally pressed ctrl+a in session view, and i didn't yet record the er1 and nord clips...
gonna be a mess to manage, gonna get color coding things better than that

note that 8000 of the clips are just to have the lights on the APC going (right now it's only the record lights marking every beats and bars, but i plan on experimenting with like, having the name of the pattern scroll with the 8x5 grid, in red, so i can still know what is playing or not between the letters, but that will be a mega PITA to program for sure, I'll look into M4L repository to see if it can be done with less programming (maybe it wil be just too much MIDI data too))

i actually already changed the colors to have better separation, but i took the screenshot after an accident (it took the time of a whole cig of beachballing while it selected all the clips lol) when its done (meaning that i'll be to the same point i was on the electribe, because it's an ever evolving thing, patterns/songs and remixe/covers come and go) i'll do a complete "map" (that will be one high screenshot)

Bar beats indicators on APC40

i made a pretty simple midi file actually for the led run, you need 8 tracks (ableton limitation that doesnt allow a track to output to all channels out)

lets say the note is c2 (its probably not but i dont have the manual here at work, but its a midi note)

you set the apc as a track out

on your 8 tracks you select the out to be the APC

track 1 channel 1, track 2 channel 2 etc

track 1 clip has a 1/16th c2 on every beat of bar 1 plus a 6 bar long c2 on bar 2 beat 1 and then again 4 times c2 on every beat in bar 8

track 2 has nothing in bar 1, 1/16th c2 on every beat in bar 2 and a 5 bar long c2 on bar 3 beat 1 then again, bar 8 is 4 beats

and so on

the long notes keep the light on after the bar played
and on bar 8 every light flash (its just to indicate me i'm at the end

as i built all the ableton set using 8 bars patterns its perfect for me (i do have a couple that wont be 8 bars but ill find a way probably using mutes and solo lights for these as i wont need to mute/solo parts in those already pre programmed songs)

as for the drum mutes, i simply MIDI assigned them as you'd do with any other controller (with the "remote" in and out set to on in the prefs

i have 1 drum column with the whole shebang on it, it feeds a midi rack with 9 dummy midi fx(i used pitch, but it doesnt matter, its just you cant have empty slots in midi racks like you can in audio racks)

so i made this rack which i key filtered every of the 11 notes used in my drum tracks and assigned the mutes of that rack to the clip stop buttons on the APC

im probably totally unclear, so just ask any questions you might have

#m4mlive after #Irene - August 29th 2011 - Muzik 4 Machines

random youtube comment i found by googling some M4M typos this afternoon, i totaly didnt remember that

There once was a young man who bought his first electronic synth and soon after he started collecting all types of electronic machines. Playing in a small room till his fingers bled and his ears glowed red, after years in his techno abode he emerged with a smile on his face and hair like Dr. who. He now goes by the name MUZIK 4 MACHINES and his midi interfaces are wired to millions around the world; wanted by the FBI for his abusive tweaking causing uncontrolled dancing.

Ableton setup(my personal convoluted method)

i posted a question on a forum and started talking wayyy too much, so i decided to blog it

ok, first let me explain a bit about my session and setup

i used to have all sequencing in the tribe, but to play the new album live, i needed linear sequencing so i exported the midi from logic to live
i really want to have each drum part on its own track in live so my column setup is something like this
kick - snare - ghost - clap - perc - closed hat - open hat - rev crash - crash - and so on*
(since i also work that way in logic it was a pretty easy transition

* for geeks only, of you don't care about the setup you can skip this part and not lose any info for the issue discussed, i just feel like talking about it

the actual live session is more like this as at the moment(because i'm SO gonna save and get a presonus 24 mixer) uses my soundcard (MOTU Traveler) as a submixer into the MOTU midi mixer
the motu inputs are kick, snare, stereo drums, er1 stereo, kaossilator, and 2 mics (talkbox and vocal) (drums are sent to out 1-2 and the mics to out 3-4
the mixing is not done in the card as there is no easy way to map controllers(mackie only) to the dsp mixer(which would be better than using live as a mixer)
the outs are then fed in the midi mixer
IN 1 - MOtu 1-2
IN 2 - Motu 5-6
IN 3 - TX81z
IN 4 - MKS50
IN 5 - DX200
IN 6 - NOrd
IN 7 - MOTU 3-4
IN 8 - (is just a vca, so it gets used as a volume for aux in 2, kaoss pad 3)
aux IN 1 - Kaoss pad 2 return
aux IN 2 - In 8 output

as for outs 7-8-9-10of the MOTU they are plugged (but not used) in the aux sends of the midi mixer with y plugs so i can have send from just the snare in the kaoss (oh yeh, aux 1 sends to kp2, aux 2 to kp3)

soooooo
mixing of those parts is done in live, plus insert fx on the talkbox (pumper and grain shifter)
so my session column is as follow

(ill go per line as the formating will be messed up)
1 - kick - mono - out 1-2
2 - snare - mono - out 1-2
3- drums - stereo out 1-2
4 - er1 - stereo out 1-2
5 - k01 - stereo out 1-2
6 - talkbox - mono out 3-4
7 - mic - mono out 3-4
8 - spacer
9 - sidechain signal for the live compressors on all -pler and talkbox)
10-VocalPler - stereo out 5-6 (for playing a capellas audio)
11-zikpler Stereo out 5-6 (for playing instrument audio parts) (both of these are legacy, i used them for live remix
12-DrumPler stereo out 1-2
13-AlbumPler steeo out 5-6 (additional tracks i cannot play live) (those 2 are only there for the album part of the set)
14-spare track (muted and disabled, for rejected/unused/not needed files i might need one day)
15-MIDI loopback 1 (when using the tribe as a sequencer, routing instrument part 2(MKS) in the nord(actually the reverse for technical reasons)
16-MIDI loopback 3 (Part 2 to vocoder (stupid pedal is channel 16 only)
17-spacer
18-Kick
19-Snare
20-Ghost
21-Clap
22-Closed
23-Open
24-Reverse
25-Crash
26-Closed 2
27-Open 2 (the 2 stretch part on the ESX)
28-Slice (pretty much unused as i havent figured out hot to advance steps on that track lol)
29-spacer
30-tx
31-mks
32-dx
33-nord
34-vocoder

there is about 500 scenes in the session but at the moment only about 250 are used, but as i transfer all sequencing data from the tribe (256 patterns, many will take like 10 scenes to hold all variations
some scenes will be exact midi duplicates but have diff vocalpler or zikpler (most remixes i do have pretty much the same backing notes, but diff words and stuff)

sooo, that was a long post, hope some peole will enjoy this geek tech talk

remix "contest" - Simulated Vacuum

the files are here
you can stream the song from here
or buy from iTunes
or even go as far as to buy a physical CD

someone asked me on youtube to have a go at remixing simulated vacuum, so i made those packs and thought, well, since they are online, why not share them with the community and see what sounds we can get from that :)

there is 3 packs, one is only the drum sound (cause i thought i had forgot to zip them with the logic session)

the MIDI plus sfx is a trimmed MIDI file ready to be imported in ableton live and the 2 stems are the "guitars" and the sfx/beep/solo (i won't even need the "guitar" in my live version, but it's there nonetheless

the Session pack is the Logic 9 session, audio files and all that is needed to open it for those among you using logic

see it on photosynth where you can pan and zoom

new toy (EHX V256)

and it's pedal board

it's a pretty convoluted chain but it works(only downside is the v256 synth has no mono and/or porta mode

the mics plugs in the v256
the main out of the v256 goes in the line selector return 1
the synth out of the v256 goes in the pedals then in the ls2 main in
the ls2 main out goes in the mixer
the loop 1 send goes into the talkbox amp
loop 2 is a loop back to have a volume control on the synth

that way i can: use the vocoder like normal OR
use the internal synth as a regular poly saw synth OR
send the synth in the talkbox, put the mix to dry on the v256 and also have a talkbox

talk about overusing a piece of gear lol

some history

someone asked me something on a forum and i started digressing, so here is a short history of how i distributed/shared my stuff and gained some exposure for pretty much nothing but time

at first i was just giving away everything on my website(mp3) it got crawled and got me thousands of hits from mp3 sites like bee and a lot of russian agregators

then when i started making lots of videos i used mininova for a long time(since the dawn of the content distribution thing) and gave everything away for free, all the time

then i started using recordunion.com (a&r code 480a116f8e, it will give you 2 free uploads] and got my music on itunes and stuff(amazon, deezer, djtunes, juno, spottify, napster, etc), got me a bit of money and some exposure

being on amazon, i managed to make an artistcentral page for the band

last month i decided to sell physical cd's i first went to cafepress cd on demand and followed the path to the closest thing there was to the original cd maker and signed up with ccnow.com, was a 40$ investment (only the second time i had to pay for anything to distribute the stuff)

i also use heavily the social networks like twitter, facebook (fan pages and profile) google plus(ask me if you want an invite if necessary)

a page on last fm with free downloads is nice too and i still keep a myspace page active

i'm also very active on youtube, with over 1.5k subscribers and over 1 million total views

still i'm looking for help too for the sending of presskits/radio play/international booking

Music for Machines/Music for Mammals RELEASE CANDIDATE

voici les dernieres versions/here are the latest versions, ready to go mix in a real studio

Live Elephant
are you a god?
Music For Machines
Penis in Line (needs a real title)
Simulated Vacuum
Suburban Electric Tornado
Transistor Casino

Edition is magic (Black Widow's Run "remixed")

2 summers ago i made a movie with @seb messinger : here (17 minutes)

today waiting for the election results i had my fun with imovie trailer featur, showing how the edition can radically change the story

first i treated it as a blockbuster with jurassic titles and zimmer-esque music: here (59 sec)

then i tried the action movie angle, with lame nu metal thinghy: here (50 sec)

then just for fun i made it a romantic comedy (you need to watch the movie to really enjoy the sarcasm on this one): here (56 sec)

and just for good measure, here is a making of/videoclip: here (4:46)
